The next Special Olympics World Games has an official starting gun. On August 25, in front of La Moneda Palace in downtown Santiago, organisers formally launched the 17th edition of the World Games. The ceremony marks one year until October 16 to 24, 2027, when Chile becomes the first country in Latin America, and the first in the Southern Hemisphere, to host the movement’s flagship event in its 58 years.
The launch was as much a civic statement as a sporting one. La Moneda is where Chile stages the things it wants the country to see. Putting athletes with intellectual disabilities on that forecourt, alongside government ministers and the organising committee, was a deliberate answer to the question every host nation faces: is this a sports event the city tolerates, or one it owns?
Santiago 2027 dates, sports, and venues
The essentials, as they stand at the one year mark:
- Dates: October 16 to 24, 2027
- Host: Santiago, Chile, the first World Games in Latin America
- Sports: 23 disciplines, up one from the program of 22 sports unveiled in May
- Unified Sports: 14 of the 23 disciplines run in the Unified format, where athletes with and without intellectual disabilities compete on the same team on equal terms
- Scale: roughly 6,000 athletes from more than 170 national delegations across 14 venues, with the opening ceremony at the renovated Estadio Nacional
Fourteen Unified disciplines is the number worth sitting with. That puts mixed ability teams at nearly two thirds of the program and moves Unified Sports from a showcase format to the spine of the Games. It is the clearest signal yet of where Special Olympics competition is heading: not a parallel games, but a shared one.
The year ahead
The path from here follows the standard World Games cadence, compressed into twelve months: national programs finalise athlete quotas through the end of this year, and venue maps, ticketing information, and a public volunteer call all arrive in early 2027.
For the athletes, the countdown is less abstract. Qualification runs through national and regional competition over the coming months, which means the roster that walks into Estadio Nacional next October is being decided now, on courts and fields and in pools around the world.
Berlin 2023 and Turin 2025 proved the World Games travel. Santiago gets to prove they belong to a new hemisphere. One year out, it has dates, a program, and a palace behind it.
