The Special Olympics experience in Athens has been extraordinary, international chairman Timothy Shriver said on July 2. Speaking on behalf of his family, Shriver said they were all thrilled to be here: “Greece hasn’t failed us at all. On the contrary, we gained friends from this. You did an amazing job. The athletes had a great time. I can truly say that Greece has outdone itself. From this time on, millions of people worldwide found out the meaning of the Special Olympics through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. My mother would be very proud if she were here,” he added, referring to the late Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
With brother Mark attending the Unity Sports Event at the softball venue in Ellinikon, he added: “I wonder why we haven’t been here before. The field of play is amazing. The atmosphere is wonderful and the sun is super. It’s a pity that you don’t take advantage of this.”
A third-generation member of the Shriver family, Tim’s son was also on the move, greeting everybody. “We thank every single one, the volunteers, the staff, the athletes,” Timbo said.
Although the Games will wrap up with the closing ceremony on Monday evening, the family is staying on for five more days on holidays at the Greek islands. “We’ll visit all the sunny places. We haven’t come up with a plan yet,” he added.
